Trevor Story has incredible Red Sox mentor to switch positions
By John Buhler
Trevor Story may learn from a Boston Red Sox legend in Dustin Pedroia about the art of playing second base.
With Trevor Story joining the Boston Red Sox in his free agency, he will have to learn how to play a new position.
The former Colorado Rockies shortstop will move over to the other side of the diamond and play some second base. This is because Boston already has a great one in Xander Bogaerts. Though Story has only played this position in his MLB career, he has the perfect mentor to handle the switch in a former college shortstop and Red Sox legendary second baseman Dustin Pedroia.
In his fantastic Red Sox career, Pedroia won four Gold Gloves playing “out-of-position” for Boston.
Boston Red Sox: Trevor Story to be mentored by Dustin Pedroia at second base
While on-field chemistry between Bogaerts and Story is more important than anything, surely, Pedroia has a few tricks of the trade to aid in the newcomer’s position switch. Leaving Colorado for Boston inserts Story into a winning environment. Though that will help with his transition more than anything, he cannot be a liability defensively for the Red Sox now at second base.
The position switch may place more of an emphasis on his bat than his glove, but he will still be required to flash the leather on the other side of the bag. Boston competes in a very tough AL East division. The fourth-placed team might be better than a few division champions in some seasons. This is why Story must get caught up to speed as quickly as he can. Pedroia can help out big time.
Again, this will be a multi-year process in one where Story will constantly be refining his defensive skills. Since this is such a short offseason because of the lockout, do not be shocked if there are major growing pains for Story defensively during his first year with Boston. Look for he and Bogaerts to put in the work before games to make this position switch as seamless as possible.
Story would not have signed with the Red Sox if he was unwilling to switch over to second base.
