Darrel Williams reacted to the Kansas City Chiefs signing Ronald Jones in NFL free agency.

There are only so many carries to be had in the Kansas City Chiefs backfield, and Darrel Williams is well aware of that.

Williams went undrafted out of LSU in 2018, but has been with the Chiefs ever since. He was part of the Super Bowl 54 championship team in 2019, seeing a career-high in production on the ground last season. While he was cool with sharing the Kansas City backfield with fellow Bayou Bengal Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Williams had some reaction after the Chiefs signed Ronald Jones.

Jones makes his way to Kansas City after spending his entire NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Because Williams is also a free agent, this move by the Chiefs could indicate that he will have to find a new team to stick with. He did set career-highs in carries (144), rushing yards (558) and rushing touchdowns (six) a season ago. Williams turns 27 years old in a few weeks, so surely he has a little bit of tread left on the tires at this stage of the game in his NFL playing career, right?

Ultimately, he would have to either accept a tertiary role in the Chiefs backfield this season or pursue another opportunity in his NFL free agency. Thus far, Williams has shown he can be a competent change-of-pace back on a great team. He may never become a bona-fide bell-cow professionally, but he will have value in the league, especially as an underrated pass-catcher.

Factoring in his receiving numbers, Williams had over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the first time in his career a season ago. With the league becoming increasingly passing-centric, he has a chance to age well in the back-nine of his playing career. However, with the Chiefs signing Jones in free agency, it probably indicates that Williams will be walking and signing somewhere else real soon.

It may stink to leave a team like the Chiefs, but others will want piece of what makes them special.
