Who is succeeding Coach K as Duke basketball coach?
By Scott Rogust
Mike Krzyzewski will enter retirement whenever the Duke Blue Devils’ season ends in the NCAA Tournament and will be succeeded by his former player and associate coach, Jon Scheyer.
The Duke Blue Devils are set to take on the No. 4 Arkansas Razorbacks in the Elite Eight, with a spot in the Final Four on the line. Whether the season ends in a defeat or the Blue Devils hoist the national title, legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski will retire.
Replacing a head coach as accomplished as Krzyzewski is always a tough task, but the Blue Devils found his successor prior to the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
Jon Scheyer is succeeding Coach K as Duke basketball coach?
Duke has already made up their mind as to who will succeed Coach K next season. That person is none other than associate head coach Jon Scheyer. The school officially announced the decision and held a formal press conference for Scheyer last June. He will take over officially this April.
Scheyer, a former guard, played for the Blue Devils from 2006 until 2010, where he recorded a total of 2,077 points, 522 rebounds, 440 assists and 208 steals. The guard recorded a field goal percentage of .406 and a three-point percentage of .381. Scheyer was also part of the 2010 NCAA championship team.
Following his playing career, Scheyer returned to Duke as an assistant in 2014. He was later promoted to associate head coach in 2018. Once Duke’s NCAA Tournament run ends, Scheyer will replace Krzyzewski as head coach.
