Red Sox star Rafael Devers is eligible for an extension and his play in spring training is only further making the case that he deserves one.

Right at the buzzer, the Boston Red Sox avoided arbitration and struck a deal with star third-baseman Rafael Devers. For many fans, though, that’s not enough. Instead, the Fenway Park faithful want Devers locked up to a long-term extension — basically at any price.

The body of work in his career should be enough of a case for the Red Sox front office to be in heavy consideration of giving Devers a massive extension.

But if that wasn’t enough, he’s continuing to strengthen his case in spring training. On Saturday in an eventual 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, the big-time slugger more than did his part with two massive bombs to put runs on the board.

Red Sox: Rafael Devers’ play makes further case for an extension

In the past week, Rafael Devers got fans a bit concerned and more tuned-in on any potential extension when he told the media that he’d not been approached about extension talks to that point.

That, of course, is not the only set of alarm bells that have sounded in Boston. While the signing of Trevor Story in free agency brought excitement about the 2022 season, it also raised concerns about the long-term future of Xander Bogaerts with the organization and, to the same tune as Devers, if he’d receive a healthy-paying extension.

While the concern is real and, to some degree, warranted, the fact of the matter is that the Red Sox would have to be severely misguided if they aren’t ready to work out an extension with Devers. After all, third basemen who have already racked up 112 homers, 263 extra-base hits and 367 RBIs with a career OPS of .847 at just 25 years old don’t exactly grow on trees.
