Kansas basketball coach Bill Self is the highest-paid coach in college basketball. What is his salary and what does he make in total?

Bill Self punched his ticket to a fourth Final Four with the Kansas Jayhawks beating Miami in the Elite Eight and will play Villanova for a chance to win his second national title.

The 2008 national champion has already reached the pinnacle of college basketball but every coach is just looking for his next opportunity to lift another trophy. For Self, it’s been over a decade and Jayhawks fans are eager to get back on top.

Kansas has committed their future to their long-time head coach with a “lifetime” contract extension for Self in 2021. Where does he stand among other head coaches in terms of pay?

John Calipari of Kentucky had been the highest-paid basketball coach but Self will be getting a sizable payday because of the current terms of his contract, according to USA Today.

Basically, Self was supposed to get $1.5 million retention payments for 2019, 2020 and 2021 assuming he remained the head coach through 2022. The pandemic got in the way of that plan a little bit and now Self is going to receive $7.2 million in retention bonuses paid out over a seven-year period instead of one lump sum.

For 2022, that means Self is credited with $10.1 million in total pay. He is guaranteed $7.2 million of that. In 2021 his take-home was just $3.6 million.

What is Bill Self’s buyout?

It would cost Kansas $5.4 million to buy out Self’s contract in 2022. At this point, that doesn’t seem to be something Jayhawks fans need to worry about.

Great coaches don’t grow on trees and it’s no coincidence that three of the five highest-paid coaches in college basketball — Self, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Villanova’s Jay Wright — are in the Final Four.
