2. Miguel Andujar
Andujar is the biggest name to appear on this list which might lead some fans to believe he’s destined to make the Opening Day roster. One quick look at the Yankees’ official depth chart reveals the cold reality that Andujar is currently the team’s third-string third baseman behind Josh Donaldson and DJ LeMahieu.
That doesn’t mean Andujar has no chance of heading north when Spring Training ends. He’s hit the ball reasonably well down in Florida with 4 hits in just 12 at-bats with a single home run. Perhaps more importantly, he’s looked more like he did during his rookie campaign when he was a doubles machine for the Yankees.
The big issue with Andujar is that his lack of a decent defensive position still makes him a tough fit with the Yankees. He is a below-average third baseman and the same can be said for his forays into left field. He’ll have to hit at a really high level to deserve a major league roster spot.
In a perfect world, Cashman would love to flip Andujar to a team that needs an everyday DH. If that market doesn’t develop, look for him to start the year in the minors once again. He’s a decent piece of organizational depth for the Yankees, but it’s unlikely he’ll develop into anything more.
