The UConn Huskies and the Stanford Cardinal will face each other in the Final Four of the NCAA Women’s College Basketball Tournament.

UConn has long been synonymous with dominance in women’s basketball, but this year, they enter their Final Four matchup against the Stanford Cardinal as the No. 2 seed battling a No. 1 seed.

Stanford and UConn are close in competitiveness: it was Stanford who won the NCAA Championship in 2021, which was their third national title and their first since 1992.

But the Huskies are unparalleled at winning, wielding a record 11 NCAA Championships. Nine of these championships have come post-Millennium in repeat, three-peat and four-peat run over the past two decades. Despite their dynastic reputation, the Huskies’ last championship was in 2016, while the Cardinal have the edge in recent competitions.

The 32-3 Cardinal are set to make their 15th Final Four appearance, while this is the 21st Final Four run for the 29-5 Huskies. Whichever team emerges victorious from this matchup is expected to take on the winner of the Louisville-South Carolina contest, with the Gamecocks tabbed as the favorite to win it all for much of the season.

UConn vs. Stanford prediction

According to BetSided, the fact that this game could go either way is evidenced by Vegas odds. Stanford is the favorite with a slight 1.5-point advantage over UConn, and it’s widely accepted that Stanford boasts a deep roster that has done well throughout the tournament. UConn, on the other hand, had an impressive 91-point win in double overtime over the NC State Wolfpack with reigning Player of the Year, Paige Bueckers leading the way.

Stanford’s defense is going to challenge UConn, and if their starters lose their foothold, it wouldn’t be hard for Stanford to score a couple of baskets and take the edge. After all, it’s unlikely that Lacie Hull would be held scoreless yet again after 40 minutes, so UConn will have to get an All-World performance from Bueckers and a loaded Stanford unit to keep the dream alive of another national championship for Geno Auriemma and knock off the reigning champs.

Prediction: Stanford wins 78-75.
