UNC-Duke rivalry: Biggest margin of victory by each school over the other
UNC and Duke have played plenty of close games over the years, but what is the biggest win that each school has posted over the other?
One of the best things about the Duke-North Carolina rivalry is that many of the games in it are close affairs. The matchup, which will be contested in the Final Four for the first time on Saturday, is usually tight since players on both sides get amped up for these games and the talent level between the two programs is often comparable.
Both meetings between UNC and Duke were blowouts in 2022, including the Tar Heels’ victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium on March 5 that ruined Coach K’s final home game, but neither was a truly epic beating that can haunt a fan base for years. Finding blowouts in the history of the Duke-North Carolina rivalry isn’t uncommon but what is the biggest win each school has had over their biggest rival since 1920?
What is the biggest margin of victory for Duke over UNC?
This year’s result in Chapel Hill, which saw Duke win by 20, isn’t quite the biggest win in terms of margin of victory for the Blue Devils in the history of this series. The largest margin of victory came back on Feb. 29, 1964, when Duke went on the road and trounced UNC 104-69 at Woollen Gym, racking up a 35-point victory over the Tar Heels that remains the largest margin of victory for a road team in the series.
What is the biggest margin of victory for UNC over Duke?
The score will look funky on this one as we have to all the way back to 1921, which was the second year of the rivalry and just the fifth meeting overall between UNC and Duke. The Tar Heels scored a 37-point victory with a 55-18 (no, that isn’t a typo) triumph over the Blue Devils in Raleigh.
