Mets: 3 pitchers to sign after Jacob deGrom injury
By Scott Rogust
Brett Anderson
Another veteran name on the open market is Brett Anderson, who has pitched in MLB for 13 years.
Anderson spent the past two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. In the 2020 truncated season, the left-hander recorded a 4.21 ERA, a 1.277 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts over 47.0 innings. Anderson picked up a 4-4 record that regular-season.
In 2021, Anderson started on the mound for 24 games, accumulating a 4-9 record, 4.22 ERA, a 1.354 WHIP and 58 strikeouts over 96.0 innings of work.
If the Mets truly want to add a starting pitcher from free agency, Anderson is one of the biggest names available.
JA Happ
Perhaps the best name available is JA Happ, who knows a thing or two about pitching in New York.
Happ spent nearly three full seasons with the Yankees, where he held a 21-10 record. 4.13 ERA and a 1.196 WHIP over 50 starts (51 games).
Following the 2020 season, Happ signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Twins. He was then dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline and put up relatively serviceable numbers to help the team clinch a Wild Card berth. In 11 starts with St. Louis, Happ posted a 4.00 ERA, a 1.278 WHIP, a 5-2 win-loss record, 45 strikeouts and 17 walks over 54.0 innings of work.
If the Mets want to explore bringing in a free agent, Happ is probably the best option of all of the unsigned players.
