Will Coach K pull a Tom Brady and chance his mind on retirement?
By Mark Powell
With Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady reversing course on retirement in style, could Coach K do the same thing at Duke?
Mike Krzyzewski is officially done as a college basketball coach. It feels weird to say.
Krzyzewski is the winningest coach in the sport’s history, and would be welcomed back with open arms were he to change his mind. However, it could also cost Duke their top assistant, Jon Scheyer, who is scheduled to take over next season with a loaded core and solid recruiting class. Who knows is Scheyer would be willing to wait?
Unlike Brady, Krzyzewski has a coach-in-waiting, essentially an unspoken agreement between Coach K, Scheyer and the athletic department that could be in jeopardy should he reverse course. Also unlike Brady, Krzyzewski is 75 years old. He has 30 years on TB12, and a family he’d love to spend his remaining years left.
Eventually, Brady will come to the same conclusion, but it wasn’t this offseason. The differences between the two are stark, despite Krzyzewski’s value in Durham and to the sport of college basketball.
Duke: Coach K on retirement, losing to UNC
After losing to UNC in the Final Four, Krzyzewski discussed retirement, first deflecting the attention to Duke’s student-athletes, who he believes deserved their moment after spending much of the year living through their Hall-of-Fame head coach.
“It’s not about me, especially right now,” Krzyzewski said. “As a coach, I’m just concerned about these guys. I mean, they’re already crying on the court. And I mean that’s the only thing you can think about.”
He then continued, shedding some light on the situation and a conversation he had with his wife before the season.
“For these guys, they’ve been a joy,” Krzyzewski said. “We made our announcement it would be our last year — I told my wife, Mickie, ‘look, we’re going for it. And I’m going to put everything into it. And I got a group, they’re young, but I think they’ve got a chance.’ And I was right about that. I was right about that. So every day — we had a few bumps in the road, but they won 32 games. And they turned it around in March where they’ve been beautiful young men to coach. I could not ask for more.”
And with that, Coach K floats off into the sunset. Whether he changes his mind is up to him, though the smart money is on an enjoyable retirement.
