UNC basketball was thrilled to send Mike Krzyzewski packing one last time, as Coach K vowed to retire at the end of this season. A Final Four defeat ensures that he’s done.

A back-and-forth affair between North Carolina and Duke became an instant classic. In Mike Krzyzewski’s eventual final game, the Blue Devils left it all on the line for their veteran head coach. Krzyzewski wasn’t going down without a fight.

But the Tar Heels outlasted the likes of Paolo Banchero, a likely top-5 selection in next summer’s NBA Draft, to send the Blue Devils home, officially. They defeated Coach K in his final home game at Cameron Indoor, and left the Blue Devils wanting more in the Final Four.

Eternal bragging rights. What does one do with those?

Well, if you’re the Tar Heels, you rub that in Duke’s face immediately. What a tweet. What a message.

UNC basketball: Tar Heels have eternal bragging rights over Duke, Coach K

Defeating the Blue Devils twice in the same season is nice — doing so to end the career of a legendary coach on the final game on his home floor, and again in the tournament? You can’t beat that.

I am no North Carolina Tar Heels fan, but those that I have seen are reveling in the moment, and likely so. This is the only non-banner achievement that a basketball blue blood like UNC should actually consider hanging in their rafters.

Krzyzewski is a legendary coach — perhaps the best of all-time at the collegiate level. He’s also the most hated for a reason. Tar Heels fans will celebrate sending him into retirement the wrong way for decades to come.
