Round 3: Nick Cross
Fitzpatrick gives the Steelersā defense a bona fide superstar at the free safety spot. They could still re-sign Terrell Edmunds to man the other safety position next season but they clearly arenāt enamored with him as any sort of long-term solution.
Thatās why nabbing Cross in Round 3 makes so much sense for Pittsburgh. Heās more of a free safety than a strong safety, but his versatility makes him an ideal partner for Fitzpatrick. Heāll need time to adjust to the intricacies of playing against NFL offenses, but Cross has the physical tools necessary to blossom into a high-quality starter.
One thing Tomlin will like right away about Cross is his ability to hit the ball carrier with force. He doesnāt always play the perfect angle in space, but heās an intimidating guy over the middle of the field. His steadiness as a tackler can free up Fitzpatrick to make the sort of athletic plays that make him a legitimate star.
Waiting until Round 4 to address the tackle position will limit Pittsburghās offensive options next season, but Cross is just a better prospect than any of the tackles that are likely to be on the board here. Thatās why Pittsburgh will eschew positional value to nab a starting safety with Cross.
