The New York Yankees have rescheduled their Opening Day game vs. the Boston Red Sox.

With rain in the forecast for Thursday’s Opening Day game, the New York Yankees have proactively kicked their season opener vs. the hated Boston Red Sox back a day to Friday afternoon.

First pitch at Yankee Stadium has been rescheduled to Friday, April 8 at 1:05 p.m. ET. For fans who had already paid for tickets to the rescheduled game from Thursday night, they can be used for the new opening date on Friday afternoon or for another game of similar value, per the Yankees’ rain check policy. Here is the link to that for fans who are unable to make it to the game on Friday.

Even if it is delayed a day, it is awesome to see the Yankees open their season vs. the Red Sox.

New York Yankees’ Opening Day game vs. Boston Red Sox already rescheduled

Given that this is a bitter division rivalry, there were plenty of options to reschedule the game. If baseball needed to do a double-header down the line or reschedule it for an open date months from now, that could have been an option. However, with their usually being an off-day after Opening Day, it will keep all the excitement surrounding the Yankees heading into this season.

For New York, this is a critical year for the franchise. The Yankees missed out on one marquee free agent after another over both waves of free agency. New York has not made it to the World Series since 2009.  Though they play in the toughest division in baseball, this team is in the win-now phase of its competitive life cycle. The Yankees are facing immense pressure to win big this year.

As for the Red Sox, they are not facing as much pressure as New York, but are expected to make the postseason again this year. While the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays loom large as well, as hot start to the season might be what it takes for the Red Sox to take early control of what could be a tight divisional race. Expect for overreactions to be plentiful after this first series.

Even if the game is delayed a day, expect for the anticipation to build with every passing hour.
