Yankees ace Gerrit Cole allowed three runs in the first inning against the Red Sox on Opening Day, and he’ll never hear the end of it.
Cole has struggled against the Red Sox since joining the Yankees — he had an ERA over five against New York’s rival just last season. 2022 isn’t off to a great start, either, as Cole gave up three runs in the first inning on Opening Day — including a two-run homer to Rafael Devers.
Devers hit a two-run homer, and Xander Bogaerts had a double of his own. While we can point out the irony of Cole giving up critical hits to two players Boston failed to reach extensions with just this past offseason, it doesn’t change the fact that the Yankees expect more from their ace.
Cole has allowed the first four Red Sox batters of the game to reach by hit or walk, tied for the most consecutive batters he's ever allowed to reach base to open a game.

Red Sox fans troll Yankees ace Gerrit Cole for rough start on Opening Day
Red Sox fans — and baseball fans in general — love to see the Yankees struggle. It’s just part of the game, especially for a club with 27 World Series to their name. But considering it’s Opening Day and Cole has a contract north of $320 million, he’ll never hear the end of it.
Boston sports fans gave Cole hell on Twitter.
Come onnnn, guys. Don't boo Gerrit Cole on Opening DAY?! It's Opening Day! It's only the first inning! I mean, I know he hasn't retired a single batter yet and every ball has been absolutely smoked, but come on! Be happy!

The game started 6 minutes ago, and the #Yankees faithful are booing: Gerrit Cole has faced four batters, and all four have reached base. It's 3-0 #RedSox

There are still nine years and $683 million remaining on Gerrit Cole's contract. Yikes.

The Yankees responded in the bottom of the first inning, as Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run shot off Nathan Eovaldi.
If we know anything about baseball, this game is far from over.
