Mets vs Nationals brawl: Who will be suspended?

The New York Mets and Washington Nationals got into a bench-clearing brawl on Friday after Steve Cishek hit Francisco Lindor on the helmet.

Sparks are already flying during the 2022 MLB season, especially between the Mets and the Nationals.

On Opening Day, three Mets batters were hit by Nats pitchers, raising tensions between the two teams. Those tensions spiked on Friday when Francisco Lindor took a pitch to the face.

Steve Cishek put the ball high and inside, sending Lindor to the dirt and prompting NY manager Buck Showalter to storm out of the dugout in anger. From there, everyone joined them in a scuffle.

No suspensions have been announced for the brawl. Cishek was the only player thrown out of the game.

Players are occasionally suspended over bench-clearing brawls. Tim Anderson got a two-game suspension applied to the start of this season for making contact with an umpire back in September of last season.

Since there wasn’t more than jawing back and forth with a little bit of pushing and shoving, it’s hard to imagine MLB will take action over that kind of “brawl” at this stage in the season. Short of something emerging that cameras missed, both teams should be able to move on from this.

Of course, MLB may be on the look out as the series continues. The Mets and Nats are scheduled to play twice more over the weekend. If pitchers are perceived as targeting batters, things could easily escalate again. In that case, the league may want to step in to put a stop to it.

Friday night’s game went into a rain delay in the ninth inning with New York leading 6-3.
