Cubs: Willson Contreras’ warning to Brewers should be taken seriously
By Mark Powell
Willson Contreras of the Chicago Cubs has been hit 14 times by Milwaukee Brewers pitching. On Saturday, matters reached a boiling point.
Contreras and the Brewers have a long history of conflict, most of which is dished out by Milwaukee pitching. Whether intentional or not, the Brewers have plunked Contreras a high quantity of times — nearly a quarter of all HBPs in Contreras’ career came from the Cubs’ NL Central rival.
The Cubs catcher was not in Sunday’s lineup against Milwaukee at Wrigley Field, thus ensuring no drama would take place with him at the center of it. But Contreras did heed a warning to the Brewers on Saturday after a conflict caused both benches to clear when the Cubs plunked Andrew McCutchen:
“I can’t say it’s over,” Contreras said, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. “On my part, I hope it dies right there, because there is a lot of talent on both teams. … Their coaching staff needs to realize that we’re human beings playing out there, and if you don’t care about other players, we don’t care about yours.”
Cubs: Should Brewers take Willson Contreras’ warning seriously?
The Cubs and Brewers play each other plenty this season, so the easy answer to that question is yes. Chicago will be the next to take a stance, as Cutch escalated matters by influencing a benches-clearing incident on Saturday.
Whether Cutch was in the right or not, should Contreras or another member of the Cubs be thrown at in the months to come, you can at the very least expect some stares from Chicago’s dugout.
The unwritten rules aren’t a thing of the past just yet.
