Pete Alonso’s error comes at critical time for Mets

Mets first baseman Pete Alonso had fans in New York pulling out their hair after he made two critical throwing mistakes in a loss to the Nationals.

All it takes is one day to go from the hero to the goat. Pete Alonso just confirmed that on Sunday for the Mets.

A day after hitting a grand slam, the first baseman and his defensive abilities came under fire because of a couple of throws in the eighth inning against Washington.

One was a questionable decision. The other was an error. Both put the Mets in a position to blow a lead and lose the game.

The Nationals first scored in the with as Lucius Fox laid down a bunt to bring Dee Strange-Gordon home from third base. Alonso scooped up the ball but his underhanded throw toss home didn’t give Tomas Nido much of a chance to tag the runner.

Two batters later Alonso committed a costly error by missing a routine throw to second base. Throwing on target to Francisco Lindor would have surely resulted in a double play and an end to the inning. Instead the bases were loaded and Washington went on to score two on a Nelson Cruz single.

The Mets lost 4-2.

After the game, Alonso stood by his decision to toss the ball home on the squeeze play and couldn’t figure out why he missed the throw to second. He took full responsibility for his costly mistakes.

“Dropping this one late kinda stinks – especially for me,” Alonso said. “When I go out there, I don’t want to let anyone down, especially not anyone in the locker room. But after not making the play there, I let the team down. And as a result, we lost the game.”
