Two former five-star offensive linemen are leaving Georgia football via the transfer portal in search of more playing time.

Georgia will have to pursue their national title defense in 2022 without two former five-star players providing depth on its offensive line.

Over the weekend, tackle Amarius Mims and guard Clay Webb both decided to enter the transfer portal.

Neither player was a starter during the championship campaign and they weren’t necessarily expected to become one in 2022 either. In that sense, the transfers will impact depth much more than the starting lineup for the coming season.

Georgia’s 2022 class included Top 50  inside lineman Earnest Greene and four-star tackles Aliou Bah and Jacob Hood among other offensive linemen, so depth should be replenished somewhat before the start of the season.

Mims ranked No. 8 overall in the class of 2021, per 247Sports. He was the No. 3 offensive tackle at 6-foot-7, 330 pounds.

Despite his immense physical presence and high recruiting ranking, Mims didn’t break through for a starting role as a freshman. He played eight games as a reserve.

His decision to leave would seem to be connected to future playing time.

As for Webb, he had been in the program for longer without being able to grab a starting job. He was the No. 26 player in the class of 2019 as the No. 1 center on the board in the 247Sports composite. He was a five-star in Rivals rankings.

He played briefly as a reserve guard but fell behind others in the pecking order on the interior. He too will be looking for somewhere to take on a bigger role as a redshirt junior with three years of eligibility remaining.
