New York Giants Mock Draft – Round 4

Baylor. player. Pick Analysis. 112. 31. Scouting Report. S. JT Woods

Another area of need for the Giants is safety, which was devastated by free-agent defections. Salary cap concerns forced New York to cut Logan Ryan, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Jabrill Peppers left for the New England Patriots.

Xavier McKinney and Julian Love are the only safeties on the depth chart right now for the Giants, making safety depth an important need to address on Day 3. Landing JT Woods out of Baylor makes a ton of sense since he can function as a backup now with the potential to succeed Love at free safety in a year or two.

The main reason why a player with Woods’ excellent speed and range could be available on Day 3 is due to some issues in coverage. There are a lot of assignment breakdowns on Woods’ tape, although good coaching could help clean up those issues and help him develop into a competent starter over time.

The Giants do have plenty of time to teach Woods the skills necessary to be a starter while using him as a third safety in sub-packages. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has plenty of experience with strong safety play from his days in Baltimore and will be a valuable tutor for Woods.
