The Chicago Cubs have started their season off strong with three of four of their regular season games won. History was made at their first game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Chicago Cubs seem to be a strong team this season, and their new players are proving to be valuable additions. Their newest player, outfielder Seiya Suzuki, made history in an April 12 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In addition to hitting two home runs for a 2-1 win, Suzuki became the only MLB player with eight-plus RBIs and four-plus walks within the first four games of his career.

Suzuki’s first home run of the game was massive, hitting his second home run of the season into the crowd at center field.

For his second home run, Suzuki drilled it into left field, hitting it straight over the fence in PNC Park.

Seiya Suzuki saves the day for the Cubs in historic MLB debut

One week into the MLB season, Suzuki is quickly earning a reputation as a power hitter. MLB is seeing many capable rookie hitters come up this season, and Suzuki is undoubtedly one of them.

Suzuki is already in the company of legendary Los Angeles Angels hitter Shohei Ohtani, as Suzuki and Ohtani are “the only Japanese-born players in MLB history to hit three home runs over their first four MLB games.” Before joining the MLB, Suzuki “launched 38 homers, had nearly as many walks (88) as strikeouts (89) and turned in a .317/.433/.636 slash line” while playing for the Hiroshima Tokyo Carp in Nippon Professional Baseball.

The Cubs won against the Pirates with a score of 2-1, which means Suzuki’s home runs were the only two scoring hits of the entire game for Chicago. He is an asset to the team and will be a major contributor to their success. In 2021, Suzuki finished the season with an 8.6 WAR, which was the highest WAR of any position player in Nippon Professional Baseball. If there’s anyone who can uplift the Cubs after their 71-91 season, it’s Suzuki.

Suzuki’s historic debut builds upon the legacy of one of the league’s most storied franchises.
