The Florida State football program got short-strawed at times in recruiting but Mike Norvell just got a big win by way of the transfer portal.

There were moments about the 2022 recruiting process that Florida State football and head coach Mike Norvell most likely would prefer to not remember. After all, they saw the No. 1 recruit in the country, Travis Hunter, go primetime with Deion Sanders at Jackson State to flip from the Seminoles.

While the sting of that flip might still be felt months later, Norvell and the Seminoles haven’t stopped working to try and restore the former glory of Florida State. And on Wednesday night, it seems like they may have taken a step forward with a big win via the transfer portal.

Per reports from Warchant.com of the Rivals network, former 5-star offensive tackle and Georgia Bulldogs transfer Amarius Mims is signing with the Seminoles, giving FSU a dominant presence that they’ve sorely needed in the trenches offensively.

Florida State football: Amarius Mims transfer is a massive victory

Mims was a top-10 overall player nationally during his initial recruitment out of high school and ultimately chose to head to Athens instead of Tallahassee at that time. After appearing in nine games and winning a national championship with the Bulldogs last season, though, he entered the transfer portal earlier this week.

His stock since coming out of high school hasn’t remotely slipped. In a loaded class of transfers, Mims still ranked as the No. 10 player in the portal according to 247Sports. That’s the type of big-time physical presence Norvell is bringing to Florida State football.

Over recent years, the offensive line has been a worrisome area for the Noles but Mims will go a long way in addressing that. While there are still plenty of wrinkles that need to be ironed out for the program to reach the heights it once occupied, notching victories such as this one shows that there is still reason for optimism with Norvell given the massive rebuild he was tasked with managing.
