Cardinals: Albert Pujols nearing another insane MLB record held by Barry Bonds
By Mark Powell
St. Louis Cardinals icon Albert Pujols is nearing another MLB record, this time threatening to pass San Francisco Giants legend Barry Bonds.
Pujols has been great as a designated hitter against lefties this season, which is the exact role he was signed for. That, and to be a veteran clubhouse influence, is what Pujols is valuable for at this point in his career.
However, he can also put butts in seats. That’s important, even for a franchise like the Cardinals, which rarely struggles with attendance.
Pujols is chasing 700 home runs, and he’s also 15 blasts away from passing Alex Rodriguez on the all-time list. Yet, that’s not the only record he’s chasing.
The odds of Pujols reaching said record are unknown, honestly. It would depend on who Pujols is facing on any given day. It’s impossible to predict. But even being in the same conversation as a player like Bonds is impressive.
Cardinals: Will Albert Pujols pass Barry Bonds?
Pujols is 42 years old, so it’s tough to find any veteran pitchers he hasn’t faced yet. The Cards’ legend’s best bet would be facing younger pitchers, and it certainly helps that he’s in the National League.
Albert spent a significant portion of his recent career with the Angels in the AL. While he struggled, he was able to put up decent power numbers. Despite a brief stretch with the Dodgers, Pujols hasn’t spent a lot of time recently in the NL. He left St. Louis in 2012. That’s a long time ago.
Pujols would be lucky to reach the 700 home run club this season. He’s headed to Cooperstown regardless of the stats he puts up this season. Another run with the Cards is just the cherry on top of a great career.
Passing Bonds’ record is an afterthought, but it’s a fun trivia statistic for all who take part.
