A Twitter thread demonstrates how Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is on track to become the NFL’s first billionaire in a matter of years.

The NFL is populated by millionaire players and billionaire owners. Although the 2020 CBA likely isn’t going to bring the majority of NFL players close to the billion-dollar mark, there’s one player who stands out above the rest as the wealthiest, savviest athlete entrepreneur: Patrick Mahomes.

Andrew Petcash, a former Boston University hooper who now reports on the intersection of sports and business, detailed how Mahomes positioned himself to become the NFL’s first prospective billionaire player.

What gave Mahomes a massive head start toward the billionaire mark was his signature on a  landmark contract in 2020. After winning Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs signed Mahomes to a ten-year, $503 million contract, making Mahomes the highest-paid player in NFL history.

But all those State Farm commercials added up, too. According to Petcash, “Mahomes makes over $22M/year from endorsements,” which include deals with brands like Adidas, Oakley, Bose, EA Sports and DirectTV.

Ironically, what positions Mahomes to become a future NFL team owner is his ownership of other sports and athletic franchises. Mahomes has a $10 million stake in the Kansas City Royals, a stake in Sporting Kansas City, is an investor/ambassador for Hyperice performance recovery products, and is an investor/ambassador for Whoop.

Additionally, Mahomes has apparently invested in 30 Whataburger franchises and hopes to one day bring an NBA team to Kansas City. A fervent supporter of local sports, Mahomes puts his investment and attendance behind the KC sports scene, and the valuation of these teams proves that these were both loyal and lucrative investments.

Although many professional athletes have spoken about learning hard lessons on how to grow their million-dollar contracts over the years, Mahomes immediately invested his millions to begin a billion-dollar legacy — and he shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
