5 Dodgers who won’t be on the roster by May 1
Which members of the Los Angeles Dodgers won’t be on the active roster on May 1?
Due to a shortened Spring Training, Major League Baseball teams were allowed to have 28-man rosters to get them through the unpredictability of the first month of the season. On May 1, the roster sizes will be reduced to 26.
Like most teams, the Dodgers used the expanded roster space to stock up on pitching due to the reduced time warming up in the spring. The Dodgers added 16 pitchers to their roster. Once the club determines who they want to keep on the active roster, they will still have some questions going forward as the status of starting pitcher Trevor Bauer is still unknown. The league still has him on administrative leave through April 22.
The Dodgers rotation consists of Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, Andrew Heaney, Julio Urias, and Walker Buehler. Craig Kimbrel is closer, and the relief pitching core consists of David Price, Daniel Hudson, Blake Treinen, and Tyler Anderson.
The Dodgers also have a loaded line-up but have benefited from some additional help. The line-up should be easy to narrow down in May. Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner, Trea Turner, Will Smith, Austin Barnes, and Max Muncy are solid corps for the Dodgers.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has an excellent group of players to work with. The expanded rosters have helped with concerns of injuries after a rushed Spring Training and start to the season. The roster expansion brought extra pitching and some backup for the line-up and defense.
This also provided Roberts with some insight into who he can trust to bring up in case of injuries or to provide backup later in the long season that takes players through the exhaustive heat of summer.
They will probably be back at some point, but let’s take a look at the five players who will not be on the active roster after May 1.
Los Angeles Dodgers: 3 players who won’t be on the roster by May 1
Justin Bruihl
Bruihl, 24, is a lefty arm who has already pitched in three games for the Dodgers, going four innings.
He’s done well giving up two hits, one walk, and hit one batter by pitch. He has one earned runs with an ERA of 2.25. He’s also struck out four batters. He has a 31.3% called and swinging-strike rate.
The cutter is Bruihl’s put-away pitch. The pitch averages 86 mph with 29.7-inches of vertical drop and an active spin of 35%. Bruihl’s secondary pitch is a slider that averages 77 mph with 47.9-inches of vertical drop and an active spin of 61%.
Bruihl will be back but should work to get innings built up in the minor leagues before earning a long-term spot in the Dodgers bullpen.
