5 Boston Red Sox who won’t be on the roster by May 1
1. Austin Davis
Davis is a 29-year-old lefty with four innings pitched in five games. He has one loss this season and an ERA of 6.75. While he’s struck out six, he’s also given up five hits and three earned runs.
Davis depends on a slider, four-seam fastball and a changeup. The four-seamer averages 94.3 mph with 14.1-inches of vertical drop with 92 percent active spin. The slider averages 80.9 mph with 40.1-inches of vertical drop with an active spin of 40 percent. The changeup averages 85.8 mph with 28.9-inches of vertical drop.
Davis has spent time in the Phillies and Pirates systems, but he no longer has any minor league options. If the Red Sox decide they no longer want Davis, it’s possible he could be released. The Sox very well could keep Davis but his short sample size of work doesn’t reflect well on him.
Davis definitely has an interesting few weeks ahead of him.
