While he could have entered the 2022 NFL Draft, formerĀ Ohio State star Sevyn Banks isĀ transferring toĀ LSU to spend his final college season playing for DBU.

Sevyn Banks could have turned pro, but he decided he wanted to be part of Brian Kelly’s family, as the former Ohio State cornerback is transferring to LSU.

Banks is a former four-star recruit from Orlando, having played his first four years of college football for Ohio State. He had 43 career tackles and two interceptions playing for the Big Ten juggernaut. A two-year starter in Columbus, Banks played an integral part in the Buckeyes’ run to the College Football Playoff National Championship two seasons ago. He is a huge pickup for LSU.

Great job by Kelly to land an absolute stud in the back-end of his Tigers defense from the portal.

While one may see moving from one blue-blood program to another being somewhat of a lateral move, there are plenty of reasons why Banks would look to finish out his college career at a place like LSU. First off, this is DBU and he plays cornerback. He may not be the next Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu or Derek Stingley Jr. in Baton Rouge, but that position group carries weight there.

Second, Ohio State is changing regimes defensively in Columbus. With former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles taking over for an increasingly ineffective Kerry Coombs, it made sense for a player like Banks to leave the Buckeyes when he did. And finally, Banks will have an opportunity to go up against the best competition weekly by playing for a program in the SEC.

Ultimately, this is why the transfer portal is good. Banks played four years at one school and has the opportunity to go to another. Not to say he will become the next Joe Burrow leaving Columbus after Baton Rouge came calling, but it really worked out for the 2020 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. For now, Banks will play a big part in helping Kelly establish himself in the SEC West.

Look for LSU to hit the ground running in Kelly’s first year with players like Banks now in the fold.
