Miguel Cabrera intentional walk: MLB Twitter destroys Aaron Boone and Yankees

MLB Twitter took New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone to task after he intentionally walked Miguel Cabrera on the verge of his 3,000th hit.

Fans in Detroit thought they had one more chance to watch Miguel Cabrera make history with his 3,000th hit when he came to the plate in the eighth inning against the Yankees on Thursday.

Then Aaron Boone ruined all the fun.

New York decided to intentionally walk the Tigers legend with runners on third and second with two outs in a 1-0 game. While Cabrera wasn’t able to take a swing, Detroit ultimately made Boone pay as Austin Meadows doubled into center field and brought home two runs.

Boone explained himself after the game saying: “Look, it’s a baseball call all the way. But there’s no doubt a little more feeling to it, understanding the situation. But in the end, you’ve got to go with what you think is right within the context of the game.”

As for Cabrera, he kept his response lighthearted. When asked if he was mad about the intentional walk, he said, “No, my on-base percentage went up.”

Cabrera might not have been angry, but MLB Twitter made up for it with anger on his behalf. While fans at the stadium were chanting, “Yankees suck!,” those at home were sending off tweets blasting New York’s manager.

Cabrera will remain on 2,999 hits at least until Friday when the Tigers will begin a series against the Rockies at Comerica Park.

A new batch of fans will turn up for that game with hopes of watching Cabrera join the 3,000-hit club, joining Albert Pujols as the only active players to cross that threshold.
