Bears fire scout who called Jaquan Brisker ‘poor, hungry and desperate’
By John Buhler
A former Chicago Bears scout was fired after his comments about second-round pick Jaquan Brisker went viral for all the wrong reasons.
Former Chicago Bears scout Chris Prescott is now out of a job after the the comments he made about the team’s second-round pick Jaquan Brisker.
While the Bears did not have a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, they had a pair in round two and shored up their defensive backfield. Chicago took cornerback Kyler Gordon out of Washington with their own pick at No. 39. With a pick they received from the Khalil Mack trade with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Bears took the talented safety out of Penn State with the No. 48 selection.
Though the Bears were excited to get a playmaker in their secondary, here is the comment that contributed to Prescott losing his job. He told ESPN’s Courtney Cronin the following about Brisker, “He’s a – what would we call it? – Ph.D? Poor, hungry and desperate. Football is his life. This is this kid’s life. There’s a lot to like about that when you see a guy who’s so passionate about football.”
Three days later, Prescott found himself out of a job, due in large part to his comments on Brisker.
Though this is not not a good look for Prescott and the Bears, there has to be more to this, right?

While the comment of “poor, desperate and hungry” may be alarming to some people, you have to realize this has long been a term used in the scouting community. Admittedly, it is not great and needs to be replaced with something better to get the point across, but it is not really a criticism of a player’s character or mental make-up. It merely signifies that football is a massive part of his life.
Where it gets dicey is it makes light of poverty. You cannot really do that in the 21st century without receiving major backlash for it. No doubt about it, football is a game of desperation. You don’t choose it, it chooses you. If you were a better basketball or baseball player, you are probably going in that direction to save your body from the physical punishment and to make more money.
Even if Prescott’s comments were supposed to be of the positive variety, they did not land that way. Ultimately, this is a new regime at Halas Hall. With Ryan Poles taking over as general manager only a few months ago, much of the scouting department are holdovers from the Ryan Pace front office. Prescott could have been let go anyway, but this comment really did him in.
Brisker was a stud at Penn State, but sadly, he has this outdated Ph.D moniker attached to him.
