Barcelona offer hope to Manchester United on Frenkie De Jong
Manchester United are set for a major summer rebuild. Poaching Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona would give the midfield a much-needed boost.
Frenkie de Jong has been a fixture in Barcelona’s midfield this season but the La Liga giants aren’t completely against the idea of selling him this summer. If Manchester United make a sizeable bid for the silky midfielder he could become a key cog of Erik ten Hag’s revolution at Old Trafford.
According to Sport, de Jong isn’t transfer listed, but Barcelona are willing to part with him if an “important” offer comes in. In other words, Barcelona officials are willing to part with de Jong if a club like United come in with a financial offer that blows them away.
The news is likely being leaked now to make sure that United understand that signing de Jong this summer isn’t an impossible dream. The English club should be prepared to spend big in the coming months to help get ten Hag’s tenure off to a good start. Signing a player with de Jong’s passing range could do wonders to help the new manager’s system hum.
What else does Manchester United have up their sleeve?
The big question is whether or not United regard de Jong as their top potential summer signing. Paul Pogba’s likely departure does leave the club with a giant hole in the midfield. On the other hand, striker will also be a position that requires significant funds to address.
United’s need to sign multiple forwards this summer may ultimately douse Barcelona’s hopes of receiving an outrageous offer for de Jong from United. That doesn’t rule out the possibility of another club swooping in, but it does diminish the odds of him moving to Old Trafford unless Barcelona are more reasonable with their transfer demands.
United fans should expect to see their club linked with de Jong until the moment ten Hag signs multiple midfielders to help implement his style. At the very least, the idea of de Jong moving to Old Trafford seems more possible than ever before. It’s still far from a certainty.
