Once thought to be a day-two draft pick, former Nevada Wolf Pack star quarterback Carson Strong went undrafted to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Even if the Philadelphia Eagles made a savvy business move to pick up Carson Strong, there is a reason behind why the former Nevada Wolf Pack quarterback went undrafted.

Despite it being a weak quarterback draft class, some pundits were higher on Strong than others. Though the notion of him going in the first round were mostly of the smokescreen variety, he was largely viewed as a top-six quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft. When his name was not called in day three of the draft, it came as a shock to many, but now we have an understanding as to why.

Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network reported that while “multiple teams had high grades on him and a few coaches were pushing for their teams to draft him, medical staffs kept pushing back because of his knee, and that’s why he went undrafted.”

Why new Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Strong went undrafted

Throughout the draft process, scouts loved his arm talent coming out of the Mountain West. However, Strong did not possess the mobility that is becoming increasingly commonplace in quarterback draft prospects. Thus, having concerns about the medicals on his knee largely contributed to him going undrafted. The Group of Five competition may have contributed as well.

So what does this mean for the Eagles? Well, they now have a Carson quarterback on their roster after a one-year absence. The idea behind signing Strong is to see if he can develop into something worthwhile at the professional level. Philadelphia is doing everything in its power to see if Jalen Hurts is the long-term solution at the position this year. After that, we will have to see.

The other countermove here is it could be the end of the line for Gardner Minshew in the City of Brotherly Love. The former Washington State standout and Jacksonville living legend is on the final year of his rookie deal. He could stick around in Philadelphia this year, but if Strong is as good as advertised, it will be hard to see Nick Sirianni dressing three quarterbacks on any given Sunday.

If the knee is not in as bad of a shape, the Eagles may have gotten something quality in Strong.
