What’s the difference between Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby
The simplest difference between the Derby and the Oaks is the gender of the horses involved. Any three-year-old can compete in the Derby, though male horses are the norm. However, only three-year-old fillies can run the Oaks.
The races themselves are also different. The Derby is one and one-quarter miles. The Oaks is one and one-eighth miles, a furlong shorter than the other.
Given the popularity of the Derby, it also carries a bigger purse. The Oaks’ purse is $1.25 million. The Derby’s is $3 million.
