Who won the Kentucky Derby?
The 148th Kentucky Derby has descended upon Churchill Downs and we take a look at who won the Run for the Roses in 2022 in an exciting field.
The moniker ascribed to the Kentucky Derby, the most exciting two minutes in sports, is certainly apt. The annual Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs is fast-paced, frenetic, unpredictable and truly unlike anything else.
Taiba and Epicenter entered the 148th Kentucky Derby in 2022 as the favorites but, one of the reason why many horse racing fans were super excited for this year’s race, was the simple fact that it was anyone’s race — particularly with polarizing trainer Bob Baffert banned. Zandon and Messier were entering the race with short odds in their own rights, just behind the favorites.
Of course, everyone is always looking for the longshot at Churchill Downs and they were in the mix too with Rich Strike, Tawny Port and Classic Causeway all looking to cash bettors big tickets on the day.
But when the clock struck 6:57 p.m. ET in Kentucky, it was time to race. So who came out victorious? We have the winner who got crowned front and center.
Who won the 2022 Kentucky Derby?
Summer is Tomorrow got off to a hot start out of the gate while Messier and Cyberknife settled in right behind the pace-setter.
However, that’s when one of the favorites, Epicenter, started to make his move. Emerging from the pack on the outside, the home stretch seemed to be setting up for the favorite but then the unthinkable happened.
Rich Strike, who got into the 20-horse field after a horse withdrew, made a huge move on the inside and chased down the leaders right before the finish line to get into the winner’s circle. Rich Strike, though he closed at 80-1 according to the broadcast, was north of 95-1 at one point, which would mean he’s the biggest longshot to ever win.
