5 teams that can make an intriguing offer for Rudy Gobert

1. Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have an offense-first star in Trae Young, and are generally bottom tier in the league across the board defensively. Owner Tony Ressler recently promised roster changes this offseason. That feels like a mandate he essentially announced he gave president of basketball operations Travis Schlenk, after some laurels were rested on following a run to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals.

“I think we should have tried to get better rather than bring back what we had,” Ressler said. “That won’t happen again. It was a mistake, in my opinion at least.”

Ressler also said he’s not afraid to spend into luxury tax territory, as long as it makes sense.

Getting right to it, here’s an offer the Hawks could make for Gobert.

Hawks get: C Rudy Gobert, SG Nickeil Alexander-Walker
Jazz get: C Clint Capela, PF John Collins, SG Kevin Huerter, a first-round pick

The Jazz get a slight downgrade from Gobert to Capela on the defensive end. But they also get Huerter (a replacement for Joe Ingles?) and Collins, who expressed frustration with his role before this year’s trade deadline but remained productive (16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game).

Alexander-Walker has been at least a 16 points per-36 minute scorer in all three of his NBA seasons, and he has also contributed at least 1.0 Defensive Win Shares in each of the last two campaigns. So he could be a very nice bench addition for Atlanta, even as a relative throw-in alongside Gobert.

If the Hawks want to go a trade route to shake things up a little, an offer for Gobert would not be far from a potential offer for someone like Simmons if the Nets were willing to entertain that. But we know (or at least strongly assume) the Jazz would listen regarding Gobert, so Atlanta goes there and makes an offer that’d be hard to refuse.
