Dmitry Bivol defied the odds to hand boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez, his second career loss. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the upset result.
Canelo Alvarez is one of the best boxers in the world. So is Dmitry Bivol.
Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) retained his WBA light heavyweight title with an upset victory over Alvarez. It was the result few expected, but it was the right call.
Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) is still the undisputed super middleweight champion, but this marks his only loss since his 2013 defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez is the most marketable fighter in the world, but Bivol’s size, skill, and conditioning proved too much for Alvarez. All three judges returned scores of 115-113 for Bivol.
The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas witnessed the loss live, but the scores weren’t much of a surprise. It was a clear victory for Bivol. FanSided had it 117-111 for Bivol.
Alvarez said after the fight that he wants a rematch with Bivol. There is a rematch clause, so there’s a good chance they will run this back.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Dmitry Bivols’s unanimous decision victory over Canelo Alvarez:
They didn’t take it, they made it. They CHOSE Bivol. Likely “penny wise, pound foolish” thinking. Bivol and his team (Vadim Kornilov is a good #boxing guy) knew this was possible and made it economically attractive. From a business standpoint, this match puzzling from the get go. https://t.co/NZNrhT6qXP

Remember Bivol said he could do Super-middle a year or so ago.

His ability and discipline more than his size was the issue tonight. #CaneloBivol
There was not a single round in which Canelo Alvarez outlanded Dmitry Bivol.

Canelo’s 84 total landed punches were a career-low for him in a 12-round fight.
Bivol threw an average of 59 punches per round, landing an average of 13. Canelo averaged 41 and 7, per CompuBox. https://t.co/ztUNHl726b
Statistically speaking, Bivol did exactly what he needed to do. He threw more (59.2 per round to Canelo's 41.3), produced a stronger start (36-21 overall, 15-2 jabs, 21-19 power in the first three), was more precise (36%-28% power), and throttled up after Canelo's late surge.

Well they wanted to rob Bivol by keeping it close but they couldn’t. Fight was not that close. #canelobivol #boxing
