Pittsburgh Steelers: Predicting primetime TV games for 2022
By John Buhler
The Pittsburgh Steelers will still probably get a handful of primetime games this NFL season.
Even as the Pittsburgh Steelers will usher in a new era of quarterbacking under center, that will still not prevent them from getting more than their fair share of primetime TV games.
With 2022 regular season games getting leaked out in the lead-up to the NFL‘s official schedule release on Thursday night, the Steelers still have no earthly idea who they will be playing when. The anticipation is killing everyone. Even though the order of the 17 games in question will be released in short order, expect for the Steelers to play in at least a handful of primetime games.
Here is our best bet as to what the Steelers’ primetime TV schedule may look like this NFL season.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Primetime TV games predictions, 2022
Because the brand is strong and the Steelers have two new quarterbacks that have the potential to move the needle in former failed Chicago Bears starter Mitchell Trubisky and No. 20 overall pick Kenny Pickett out of Pitt, Pittsburgh will get about three primetime games this season. Two is probably more appropriate, given their current quarterbacking change, but three is very likely, too.
Looking at their 2022 opponents, anticipate the Steelers to play one AFC North rival in primetime, another comparable AFC team of note and potentially someone out of the NFC. While any of their division rivals make sense to be aired in primetime, the home date vs. the Cincinnati Bengals stands out. On the road at the Baltimore Ravens seems interesting, but let’s go with the Bengals.
Another AFC opponent feels obvious here. Home vs. either the Las Vegas Raiders or the New England Patriots could work, as could on the road vs. the Indianapolis Colts or the Miami Dolphins. Bringing Brian Flores back to South Beach would be incredibly petty, but going into the Horseshoe to take on an AFC South-contending Colts team with Matt Ryan sounds exceptionally Thursday.
As for the third game, bringing Pickett and his tiny hands into Charlotte to win his professional ACC Championship over the Carolina Panthers sounds like a blast. The same principle would apply to a guaranteed win over the Atlanta Falcons in front of a 90-percent pro-Steelers crowd. Rather than waste multiple primetime games on those two, have the New Orleans Saints come to town.
Steelers primetime TV predictions: 3, (vs. Bengals, vs. Saints, at Colts).
