Lions fans will love Jameson Williams’ reason for choosing No. 18

Detroit Lions rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams revealed why he chose the No. 18, and he will win over plenty of fans for it.

The Detroit Lions had a first-round that fans will remember for quite some time. Not only did Michigan pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson fall to the Lions at the No. 2 pick, but they negotiated a trade with the Minnesota Vikings to trade up to select Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams.

At Lions rookie minicamp, Williams was spotted wearing a No. 18 jersey. When meeting with the media, Williams revealed he chose the number as a nod to former Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

While No. 18 was a nod to “Megatron,” Williams also said he chose it because Randy Moss wore that exact same number when he played for the then-Oakland Raiders.

Williams was one of the top wide receivers in this year’s draft class and could have very well been selected higher. However, he suffered a torn ACL while competing in the CFP National Championship Game for Alabama.

In 15 games this past season with the Crimson Tide, Williams recorded 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Williams is the first wide receiver to be selected in the first round by Detroit since Johnson back in 2008. The Lions traded the No. 32, 34 and 66 overall picks the Vikings to move up to No. 12 and also picked up pick No. 46 in the process.

Now, he joins a Lions offense with Jared Goff at quarterback and will line up alongside wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had a stellar rookie season in 2021.
