Reds no-hitter: Pittsburgh Pirates make wrong kind of MLB history
By Mark Powell
The Pirates were able to defeat the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon, despite not picking up a hit. When was the last reds no hitter? How about Wade Miley in 2021.
Can you really call it the wrong kind of MLB history if the team wins? Likely not, but the Pirates sure would’ve rather had one — if not more — tallies on the days to avoid such a conundrum.
Pittsburgh became just the sixth team in the modern era to win a baseball game without recording a hit.
As for the Reds, Hunter Greene is given a tough loss despite 7.1 innings of hitless baseball. Reliever Art Warren pitched the other .2 innings.
Last Reds no hitter
The last Cincinnati Reds no-hitter was thrown by Wade Miley in 2021. Miley took a perfect game into the sixth inning and was able to hold on for a no-no against Cleveland last May.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever been a part of anything in pretty many years in the game where it was this joyful and just truly authentically happy for one player,” Reds manager David Bell said. “What an incredible performance. I don’t even know where to start. I think the thing that stands out is Wade was, right from the very beginning, he had command of all his pitches. He was working fast like always. He didn’t change a thing the whole game.”
How many teams lose a no-hitter?
The Reds became just the sixth team to lose a game in which they gave up no hits.
