Yankees rumors: Alexander Vargas is the other shortstop prospect to trade for Frankie Montas

Someone even further away from the big leagues than Sweeney is the team’s number 17 prospect, Alexander Vargas. Yet another shortstop, he has an ETA of 2025. Aside from being behind Volpe and Peraza, 17-year-old Rockerick Arias (13) ranks ahead of him at the position.

Vargas is so far away from making it to the major leagues that trading him now for anything is simply moving a lottery ticket. He hasn’t played particularly well as a professional thus far but as a 20-year-old there is a chance for him to continue his development and become a quality major leaguer in the future.

Projects like Vargas are what a team like the Yankees should be looking to move for someone like Montas. Give the Athletics all of the not-near MLB prospects they have. New York has been pretty good at not giving up too much at past trade deadlines in order to bolster their roster for the stretch. Even if the 2017 trade for Sonny Gray didn’t get them what they wanted, giving up Dustin Fowler, James Kaprielian, and Jorge Mateo didn’t set them back whatsoever.

Although Montas might not be a star pitcher, he could end up being one of the very best available this summer. The Yankees will have to give up something good to get him. Players at positions they have alternative options at and ones far away from the major leagues should be at the top of the list.
