Mets’ Pete Alonso, Cardinals coach put bad blood aside despite recent brawl
By Drew Koch
New York Mets’ first baseman Pete Alonso seems content to let bygones be bygones.
The New York Mets played a doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon and all eyes were on Pete Alonso and Stubby Clapp. But the Mets’ first baseman, who was tackled by the Cardinals first base coach a couple weeks ago, took the high road.
For those who don’t remember, after Buck Showalter’s bunch had been hit more often than the bullseye of a dunk tank at your local town carnival, tensions were a bit high on April 27th at Busch Stadium.
J.D. Davis had already been drilled in the ankle by Genesis Cabrera and in the previous game, three Mets players were hit by a pitch. That included Pete Alonso who took an 83-mph pitch off his helmet.

With the Cardinals leading 10-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mets pitcher Yoan López came up and in on Nolan Arenado and the St. Louis third baseman took exception. Arenado began jawing with López and the benches cleared.
As the brawl escalated, Alonso was tackled by Clapp. Eventually, cooler heads prevailed and order was restored. The Cardinals would go on to win the game, but with yesterday’s doubleheader, fans were curious how Alonso would handle himself with Clapp standing just a few feet away.
Rather than escalating the situation further, Pete Alonso gestured to Stubby Clapp with a fist bump from a distance and the St. Louis coach returned the favor. It appears as though Alonso and Clapp have buried the hatchet.
The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals have rubber match later tonight after the two clubs split the doubleheader on Tuesday. Hopefully things remain calm between both teams. The Mets and Cardinals are both performing well to begin the season, so there’s no need to risk injury or suspension by revisiting last month’s donnybrook.
