Kansas basketball lands huge transfer to aid national championship defense
By John Buhler
Kevin McCullar is transferring in-conference from Texas Tech to the Kansas basketball team.
The Kansas basketball program just got a huge pickup in the transfer portal by way of former Texas Tech guard Kevin McCullar.
On Thursday night, McCullar shared a graphic signifying he is transferring within the Big 12. While he has deep roots at Texas Tech, the veteran guard will be making his way from Lubbock to Lawrence to help the Jayhawks in their national title defense. McCullar averaged 10.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game in 29.9 minutes per contest during his final Texas Tech season.
Here is the official announcement of his transfer sent out by McCullar over Twitter Thursday night.
Kansas basketball gets a huge pickup in the portal by landing Kevin McCullar
While McCullar had considered entering the 2022 NBA Draft, he makes a smart decision for him to switch Big 12 allegiances at this stage of the game. Though Texas Tech is firing on all cylinders as a program, Kansas is an undeniable blue-blood that just won a national title. The really interesting part is that was nowhere near the most talented team Bill Self has ever coached while at Kansas.
Ultimately, Kansas is getting a two-way guard who can defend, rebound and score in the paint. While his jump shot leaves a lot to be desired, McCullar will be playing with even better players at Kansas. This could allow him to refine his shooting stroke, as well as be a veteran leader coming aboard a team that will certainly be battling varying levels of complacency during its title defense.
The Big 12 has become a buzz saw, but Kansas is still the program sitting at the very top of it.
