Sources: All signs point to Giants calling up Luis Gonzalez

After a quick turnaround in Triple-A, it appears the San Francisco Giants are bringing Luis Gonzalez back up to the majors.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Luis Gonzalez was a late scratch with Triple-A Sacramento and was seen clearing out his locker late Thursday night, a strong indication that he is being promoted back to the majors, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Gonzalez, 26, was shockingly optioned to Triple-A earlier this week. In 21 games, he was hitting .349/.397/.492 with two home runs and 15 RBI and had emerged as the Giants’ best outfielder. But with Tommy La Stella coming off the Injured List, and Gonzalez having minor-league options available, he was sent down in a decision that manager Gabe Kapler called “one of the most challenging discussions” he’s had as a manager.

It’s not something that Kapler or the Giants are unfamiliar with, though, as they made a similar decision last year to option the scorching-hot Lamonte Wade Jr. to Triple-A. Wade was called up less than a week later — and all signs point to Gonzalez’s stint being just as short.
