Tiger Woods leaves open possibility of withdrawing from final round at PGA Championship
Tiger Woods fought hard to make the cut at the 2022 PGA Championship but, after a pain-filled and bad third round, he might withdraw from the final round.
What Tiger Woods accomplished on Friday at the 2022 PGA Championship was nothing short of remarkable. In just his second tournament back since the early-2021 car accident that nearly caused him to lose his leg, he fought back from an opening-round 74 and through obvious pain to shoot a 69 and make the cut.
However, that obvious pain was even more evident on Saturday as the temperatures dropped dramatically and Southern Hills continued to be demanding. And the effects showed on the scorecard as Woods plummeted down the leaderboard with a 9-over round of 79 that has him tied for 76th going into Sunday.
But if you listen to him talk after the round, there’s a chance he might not even take the course on Sunday.
Will Tiger Woods withdraw from final round of PGA Championship?
In his post-round interview, Woods was asked about the possibility of withdrawing from the final 18 holes. While Tiger has often been ultra-competitive and never willing to back down from a challenge, he seemed alarmingly open to the possibility of withdrawing:
There is certainly nothing definitive in Woods’ comments, so we don’t know if he’s going to withdraw or not. In fact, it’s pretty simple to say that we have to take him at his word for it that he’s not feeling great physically but is going to test out and rest what he can and make his decision from there.
However, the argument could be made that he’s already achieved a victory this week. Woods making the cut with his injuries and the rust from not playing competitively in over a year is remarkable in itself. Battling on a tough golf course to make it happen is even more impressive.
Then again, you don’t get to be Tiger Woods without an otherworldly competitive streak. So you also can’t rule out that he’ll fight through 18 more holes to finish what he started. We’ll have to wait and see.
