Yankees have an actual cheat code out of the bullpen right now
By Scott Rogust
The New York Yankees, who hold the best record in the American League as of May 21, may have a cheat code out of the bullpen.
The New York Yankees looked to continue their winning ways this weekend, as they began their series against the Chicago White Sox after their game was rained out the day prior.
New York carried a 7-5 lead ever since the bottom of the sixth inning at Yankee Stadium. After Miguel Castro faced three batters in the top of the eighth, the Yankees called upon their cheat code out of the bullpen in Clay Holmes. He retired the next four batters to clinch New York’s league-leading 29th win of the season.
With this, Holmes has now recorded 21 scoreless innings in 19 appearances.
Yankees have a new cheat code in reliever Clay Holmes
Holmes entered the game with Gavin Sheets on second base and Andrew Vaughn standing in the batters box. He forced Vaughn to ground out after two pitches. In the ninth inning, Holmes got Luis Robert to strike out swinging, Jose Abreu to groundout and Yasmani Grandal to strike out swinging to end things.
The 6-foot-5 reliever recorded his fourth save of the season with this latest outing. Holmes carries a ridiculous 0.42 ERA and 0.69 WHIP, while striking out 21 batters in 21.2 innings of work.
Closer Aroldis Chapman has struggled as of late, and the bullpen lost one of their reliable relief pitchers in Chad Green to an elbow strain. Yankees fans are sure glad to see Holmes step up in a huge way for the team.
Now, they await to see how long his scoreless innings pitched streak lasts.
