Bill Belichick is being wildly catty about not having an offensive play-caller

Bill Belichick has given no hint as to who will be the New England Patriots’ offensive play-caller for the upcoming season.

The New England Patriots returned to the playoffs last season after missing it the year prior, where they were bounced out by the rival Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round. Afterwards, they saw offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels leave to become the head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. That left the question of who will be the team’s offensive play-caller for the 2022 season.

During Patriots minicamp, Belichick was asked who would be the play-caller for the team’s offense and he sarcastically asked a question of his own. That was “what plays are we calling? Minicamp plays?”

Belichick did say, however, that he does not have a specific timeline for when he will announce his decision.

There are two names that have been linked to the position lately, and they are former head coaches Joe Judge and Matt Patricia.

Judge was fired by the New York Giants after two seasons, with the 2021 ending in complete disaster that was highlighted by an 11-minute postgame rant going rival, and back-to-back quarterback sneak calls in New York’s own territory in the regular-season finale. He was brought back to New England, this time as an offensive assistant. But, it has been known recently that Judge is coaching the quarterbacks, which was later confirmed by Mac Jones. After being hired by the Detroit Lions in 2018 to be their head coach, Patricia was let go midway through the 2020 season. He made his return to the Patriots in 2021. The team page lists him as a senior football advisor, but he has been seen working with the offensive line.

Belichick has an important decision to make, considering this is the second year for Jones as their starting quarterback. Will he choose either Judge or Patricia? Or will he call the plays himself? We’ll find out when the Patriots head coach announces the decision…whenever that is.
