The latest update on Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes isn’t good news for St. Louis with shoulder surgery now deemed necessary.

The St. Louis Cardinals‘ hopes of getting Alex Reyes back anytime soon have been thoroughly dashed.

On Monday, St. Louis revealed that Reyes was getting a consultation in Los Angeles to determine if he will need shoulder surgery.

Now, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the results are in and the news isn’t good.

Alex Reyes injury update: Pitcher needs surgery

“Brutal news for Alex Reyes and the #STLCards,” Woo tweeted. “After seeing Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, it’s determined Reyes will need surgery to address pain in his throwing shoulder. That surgery has been scheduled for end of May and will likely (but not definitively) end his season.”

There’s little doubt about Reyes’ potential, especially coming off an All-Star season in 2021. However, his availability has not been stellar in his Cardinals career so far.

He had Tommy John surgery in 2019 and made 19 total appearances between 2019 and 2020 while dealing with a variety of injuries.

Pain in his shoulder has kept Reyes from taking the mound so far this season. The surgery will delay his debut and potentially end his year before it can begin. It’s a “one step forward, one step back” scenario for the player and the team.

Reyes had an ERA of 3.24 with 29 saves in 2021. It was far and away his most complete season in the MLB.

Fans will have to be patient again as they wait for Reyes to make his way back.
