Cardinals rumors: David Robertson is the Cubs reliever to target

Cubs reliever David Robertson is essentially in the same spot as Quintana except his story involves a lot more injuries. Once one of the game’s best high-leverage relievers who turned into a pretty good closer, he has been working through several injuries since landing on the IL as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies back in 2019. He pitched only 6.2 innings for them, missed all of 2020, and returned for only a dozen more with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021.

This year, working as the closer for the Cubs, Robertson has 6 saves and a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings of work. Longer in the tooth than Quintana, Robertson is already 37 yet someone we should see heavily shopped this summer. The Cubs are going nowhere and he is a name we could see appear in future Cardinals rumors.

Robertson could either continue to serve as a closer in St. Louis or give them protection in the seventh or eighth inning. Giovanny Gallegos has been questionable at times. What’s not debatable is how much better Robertson has been in the early part of this season. His sustainability after missed so much time in recent seasons might be the one biggest knock against him. At the price of only an expendable prospect or two, he’s a guy the Cardinals and Cubs should talk about.
