2. Fumbling the Randy Gregory re-signing

There was a glorious sub-24-hour period for Cowboys fans when it appeared that arguably the biggest pending free agent on the roster, Randy Gregory, was returning to the roster for another season.

Then that all went away.

When the Cowboys put their standard offsetting language regarding a forfeiture clause into the deal, Gregory changed his mind. That then quickly led to him signing a contract with the Denver Broncos and leaving Dallas in a tough spot defensively.

Now, you could make a good argument that this wasn’t all on the franchise. By all accounts, the language that caused Gregory to balk is nothing outside of the norm for America’s Team (whether that’s good or bad remains to be seen). But when you get down to brass tacks, the truth is that they lost an explosive pass rusher and now have a hole in that regard.

DeMarcus Lawrence remains an all-around force off the edge but the Cowboys will now be relying more heavily than they would almost definitely like to on the likes of second-round pick Sam Williams and Dorance Armstrong. They are going to feel the effects of not having an explosive presence like Gregory opposite Tank Lawrence on the edge.
