Red Sox: 3 times Trevor Story made history this May
By Mark Powell
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story is red hot, hitting eight home runs in the month of May, including a blast on Tuesday night against the White Sox.
Story’s month of May was much-needed by both he and Red Sox Nation, as Chaim Bloom and the front office had to have had buyer’s remorse at some point in the late stages of April.
The former Rockies shortstop was not himself, and surely was not a byproduct of Coors Field as his April numbers suggested. Eight home runs and 27 RBIs later, and Story is the centerpiece of Boston’s current lineup, and has some Boston fans wondering if they even need Xander Bogaerts next offseason (we kid, of course).
Story signed with Boston and volunteered to switch positions in an ultimate selfless move. If that wasn’t enough to make him a Sox fan favorite, May’s splits ought to do the trick.
Red Sox: 3 times Trevor Story made history this month
First, we have to go back to May 19’s three home run game against the Seattle Mariners. Story broke out of his slump in a historic way, becoming the first Red Sox second baseman to hit three home runs in a game since Dustin Pedroia more than a decade ago.
Talk about joining elite company.
As for Story, a notorious streaky hitter, his latest streak is unique even for him. The Sox second baseman has eight home runs in his last 12 games — that’s the most for Story in any 12-game span in his career.
And it came when the 29-year-old needed it most.
And lastly, in his last five games — all of them wins, for what it’s worth, Story has 17 RBIs. That mark tied Alfonso Soriano for the most in any five-game stretch since 2013.
So much for the return of the dead ball era. Story seems just fine.
