Yankees, Rays Twitter accounts bypass game coverage to educate fans on gun violence

The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays played a baseball game on Thursday but the AL East clubs’ Twitter accounts had a bigger message to share.

With the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays taking the diamond against one another on Thursday for the start of a series, you’d figure that both teams and all involved would be locked in for an early-season battle between AL East contenders. However, the team’s Twitter accounts had other plans and something bigger to discuss.

Namely, they turned their respective focuses in collaboration with one another to Uvalde, Buffalo, Irvine and the other areas of the United States affected by horrible tragedies as the result of gun violence.

Instead of covering the game in St. Petersburg, the two teams used their Twitter platform to educate fans on gun violence as they each released statements regarding their plans.

They indeed followed through with their promise as, while the two teams played, they provided information and statistics regarding gun violence, which you can check out on their respective Twitter profiles.

This has been a tragic month in terms of gun violence in the United States and for two organizations in such a prominent position to make this type of statement speaks volumes.
