Ancelotti becomes most successful coach in UCL history

Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the UCL final, allowing Carlo Ancelotti to become the most successful manager in UCL history. 

Carlo Ancelotti guided Real Madrid to the Champions League trophy on Saturday. In doing so, he won his fourth UCL crown to become the winningest manager in the tournament’s history.

The Italian led AC Milan to the title in 2003 and 2007, before conquering the continent again with Real Madrid in 2014.

“I think the fact that nobody thought we could win it helped us. I think we’ve deserved it,” Ancelotti told reporters in the post-match news conference. “We had to suffer a lot to win it, all the way from the last 16, but we never gave up. I have to say that it’s easier to win a Champions League with Real Madrid than with any other club.”

Only two coaches have won three European Cup titles: Real’s Zinedine Zidane and Liverpool’s Bob Paisley.

In surpassing them, Ancelotti made history at the Stade de France. He also lifted the trophy twice as a player, in 1989 and 1990, when he played under Arrigo Sacchi at AC Milan.

Although Los Blancos only managed one goal in the final, Ancelotti said he never doubted his players.

“I think we managed today’s game well since the key was to avoid giving their front line space,” he added. “Our back four played very well and they never managed to find space in behind. When their press dropped in the second half, we played better with the ball and we won the game.”
